La Cruz, April 10, Saturday

When we got up we had our coffee, breakfast, read our bible passages for the day then got underway. Out a couple of miles to dump the holding tank, then back into the marina and tied up in slip B11 on dock 3. This is over a bit from where we were the last time. We are here to get some things done, and get to church on Sunday.

After getting settled in, we checked into the marina and eventually got around to replacing the membrane for the water maker. This required watching some video’s about how to do it, eventually getting it in. While working on it, I discovered that somewhere along the way someone lost one of the four screws that hold the two membranes up in the aft lazarette. I also dropped one, (then a nut as well) so we were short two of these fairly important screws. So, I took the cover off the steering box and flushed out a really good hiding place for screws and nuts, all told I think I found about 10. Two of which were the missing screws that I needed to mount the membranes back in place, the nut too. Reneé helped handing me tools and pointing out that it was a good thing I was not claustrophobic. As I was laying there putting it all back in place I thought about my least favorite job in the Navy, which was the replacing heaters on the Lube Oil Purifiers. These were in the bilge under the Lube Oil Purifiers, in the lowest most aft bilge in the engine room on the submarine. In that case, I worked on my back reaching between my knees, in this case I was laying on my side holding the membranes up and using my left hand to put the screws in. Finally everything was in and hooked up. So, I hooked up the dock water and ran it for an hour to flush the chemicals out of the membrane, then we got showers and went to bed.
