March 9th, 2025 Sunday La Paz (Marina Costa Baja)

Up at 0600, I did not sleep well, the temperature was not being very consistent, mostly too cold. We had all three units running, and I thought I had them all on heat. When I finally got up, and checked, I found the front unit was on max cold, and the front stateroom was 60 degrees, the salon was 65 as was the aft stateroom, all three were set at 73. Apparently, on max cold the front unit really works!
Anyway, after breakfast and dishes we caught the shuttle into La Paz and walked to church. After church we didn’t communicate well, and walked to the Malecon (walkway by the beach in front of town), realized that the restaurant Reneé was thinking of was north and east of where we were. So, we walked some more. Eventually we got to that restaurant, Reneé said, no. So we headed towards the Catholic Church where we were supposed to meet the shuttle. We checked a few more restaurants along the way. No joy. We had about given up. Church got out at 11:30, the shuttle was scheduled for 1:30 and it was about 12:35. One last check, we found a restaurant around the corner from where we were (1 minute walk according to Google). We got lunch, not exactly what Reneé wanted, but still pretty good. Then a short walk and as we got to the pickup point, the shuttle showed up and we got on. By the time we got back to the boat, we were both pretty tired and I had walked 10,400 steps or about 4 miles.
After a nap, Reneé did some cooking, and I rinsed the salt off the boat.
After dinner we played a game then just vegged.

This is Romanesco broccoli

  1. WOW!! Can’t wait to hear what the results are on the engine. Always thought Yanmars were pretty bullet proof.

    1. I have had a mechanic look for the oil leak twice, 1st was the guy who did the work in Puerto Vallarta, 2nd was here in La Paz. The first guy did not find it (it is very small, it took 80 hours at full load to leak 3 quarts of oil). The 2nd guy thinks possibly two small copper washers were left out or deformed when the heat exchanger cleaning was done. The other possibility seems to be the rear main seal. I am hoping for the first one, but I won’t know until the mechanic does some work.

    2. I posted this in one of the daily posts, but in case you did not see it, here it is again. The oil leak turned out to be the copper washers (crush type) on the line coming from the oil pump to the oil cooler. Obviously a very small leak, and if the engine was test run at 2000 rpm, the oil pressure was not that high and it was not obvious. The water leak was from the raw water pump (sea water). The plate over the impeller was held on with 4 screws/bolts, two of these were hand tight. The o-ring was flat from having been reused too many times. Also at 2000 rpm this did not leak. Only when the motor was taken up to 3000 RPM was there enough pressure to really leak sea water.
The manual for the engine shows continuous rating as 56 hp at 3000 rpm, 75 hp at 3800 hp for up to 1 hour. I run the engine at 3000 rpm for hours on end, the water temperature sits at 180 degrees F. Oil pressure is near the top of the guage.
Presently all leaks fixed, engine room is clean and dry!
