April 9, Thursday, Puerto Don Juan out for laundry and water

We woke up around 7 30 am. Had breakfast and listened to the news. Did our devotions, and prepared to get underway. The S/V O’boy contacted us as we were bringing in our anchor. They are headed back  to Santa Rosalia. They have a hacked PayPal account, banking and other issues to deal with.

We went out and once we were clear of the Puerto we started the clothes washing. This means the generator goes on, and then the washer gets loaded and started. Once we were outside of the bay, I started the water maker and started filling the water tank. After the first load of clothes were done, Renee’ started the second one. While the washer is technically a Washer/Dryer, we don’t use it to dry the clothes as it uses steam and takes about an hour and a half longer to dry a load of clothes than it does to wash them. So, when the wash cycle is done, the clothes get hung up inside the cabin. Since the generator was running anyway, I turned on the A/C on heat and turned on all the cabin fans to help dry the clothes.

We filled the water tank, it took about 4 and a half hours, and it was running at about 15 gallons per hour. Water quality is slightly less than 70 ppm total dissolved solids. US drinking water is typically <500 ppm. So, we have pretty good water on the boat. Today, I figure we made roughly 70 gallons of water. That is 3 days + 2 loads of laundry use, for the two of us. So, 6 showers and dishes for three days. Fairly efficient, even though we really don’t have to be, as we have a 260 gallon tank for fresh water.

While we were out today, we saw the S/V O’boy headed south (120 miles to Santa Rosalia), and no body else. We saw some birds, the pelicans are fun to watch, they fly in a straight line, about 3 feet or less off the water. The seagulls seem very curious as to what we are doing, as they tend to circle the boat. Especially when there is only one of them. We saw no dolphin today, or anything else for that matter. After we had been out for about 4 hours or so, the wind came up, it started at about 5 knots when we left Puerto Don Juan at about 9:30 or so, and by 12:30 or 1 pm it was up to 20 knots. By the time we came back into anchor we saw 30 knots. This makes anchoring a bit unpleasant. When we came back into Puerto Don Juan, we changed where we are anchored to a spot that is more protected by the peninsula, and since the tide is in, we are in about 40 feet of water. We checked this Puerto and part of the reason it is such a good anchorage, is that the whole place is less than 45 feet deep. With the tide swings, that means 50 feet of less. We anchored at high tide in 40 feet of water, we put out 180 feet of rode, which is more than normal, but we are in deeper water than normal as well.

We are starting to think about what to bring back to the boat for the next season. One thing we are definitely looking for are good games for two players. We are game players, and while we have limited room for storage, we need more games. Currently we have cards and two other games, one is Qwirkle, which is a games similar to dominos, but done with shapes and colors instead, and Pirateer. Both of these games were suggested by our friend Ken McMillen. With the cards, we play a couple of games, specifically Rummy 500 and Baja Rummy. While both are variations of Rummy, the Baja version takes one more deck of cards than players, so for us to play it takes 3 decks. We play a game almost every other night. The only problem with the games we have is that Qwirkle has the shapes painted on black tiles, and at night with somewhat limited light, it can be hard to see the colors and shapes (at least for me, being slightly color blind). So, if you have a great two player game, we are looking for suggestions.

We do have room for guests, if anyone is interested in visiting and spending a week or so with us, drop us a line and we will coordinate. What you have to do/have is you need a sport and will need to be able to get to where we are when you are going to be down. When we know what time frame you are thinking about we can let you know where we expect to be so that you can make your travel arrangements.

  1. You probably have or know a bunch of these games, but just in case you don’t, here are rules to some 2 player dice games. Courtesy of a website I googled. Looking forward to playing cards with you guys in the future.

Fun Dice Games You Can Play Everywhere
    10,000

The game 10,000 is probably one of the most popular games. For sure you have heard about it already – some people also call it 5,000 depending on the rule set they apply. The game is also known as greed or the greedy dice game.

Number of players: 2 or more. Number of dice: 6
You need at least two players, but there is no maximum number of players. So you can play it with a group of friends or your whole family. The game is played with 6 dice, although there are also 5 dice variants.

The game is all about testing your luck – it really comes down to taking chances to increase your score quickly. The first player to reach 10,000 points will win the game.

Don’t wait any longer and test this game now – I guarantee that you will have a great time. Check out the greed dice game rules here!

    Pig- The Dice Game

Just like the game 10,000, Pig is a fun dice game in which you need to push your luck. You often need to make the decision to risk the points from a roll in order to try and get a higher score by rolling again.

Number of players: 2 or more

    Number of dice: 1

Pig is easier than 10,000 – these are the steps in the game:

Decide who will start by having each player roll a dice – the one with the highest score starts the game. A player’s turn starts by rolling only one dice. The player continues to roll the dice again, as long as he does not roll a 1 or decides to add his points to his overall score.

Each time the player rolls the dice, the following options exist:
The player rolls a 1 – his turn ends without any points (he also loses the points from any previous rolls in the current turn).
Any other number than a 1 is rolled – the player can add that number to the points scored in his current turn and continue by rolling the dice again.
The player decides to end his current turn and add all the points from his turn to his overall score.
The game ends when a player has reached 100 points and becomes the winner of the game!

    Mexico –
Number of players: 2 or more

Number of dice: 2 rolling dice and one additional dice for each player in the game

The Mexico dice game is fun and easy to play! It requires 2 dice for rolling and one additional dice for each player in the game.

At the start of the game, each player receives one dice that will track the number of lives that player has. Each player starts the game with 6 lives.

In the first round, all players take their turn and roll the 2 dice. Each player’s score in that round is simply the sum of both dice. The player with the lowest roll in that turn loses a life and has to change his personal dice accordingly (from 6 to 5 in the first round).

The game is continued and each round a player loses a life. When a player has lost all his or her lives, that player no longer participates in the game. The game ends when there is only one player left and all other players have lost all of their lives.

    Chō-han (or Chō-Han Bakuchi)
Number of players: 2 or more

    Number of dice: 6

Chō-Han is a very simple but very popular Japanese dice game. The rules are easy: you roll six dice and keep the result a secret. Each player then bets on the result: whether the sum of the dice is an odd (Chō) or even (Han) number.

You can play this game in a group, against each other (with the same number of players betting on odd or even) or against one player that acts as the bank.

The game is very popular in Japan and is often played in TV shows or movies.

    Chicago – Dice Game
Number of players: 2 or more

    Number of dice: 2

The Chicago dice game is a simple yet fun game. The rules are not very difficult and the game is decided by pure luck, but still it is very addictive. Once you start you might not want to stop to see if you can do better in the next game.

The game is played in 11 rounds, starting with round 2, then going to round 3 and continuing until round 12. In each round each player takes his or her turn and rolls both dice, trying to roll the number of that round. For example, in the round with number 2, you aim to roll a 1 on each dice giving you a total of 2.

Every player that rolls the number of the current round gets a point and adds it to his overall score. After all 11 rounds are finished the game ends and the player with the higher number of points is declared the winner.
