Make Me Laugh Again

I woke up early, Renee’ slept in some. When we got up we had breakfast and did our devotions. Yeah, they same as yesterday. Only worse the waves are bigger and there is some more wind.

We talked to the other boats in the anchorage, there are a total of 6 of us now. Most have a stern anchor out. We talked to the port captain, who said that he expected that we would probably come into the marina tomorrow around 10 am (due to the weather) and then back out here when the weather improved. After suggesting that we might need to adjust where the stern anchor was we went out and looked, good thing! The Anchor rode is a multi strand line (I think 3 big strands made up of many smaller ones). Two of the bigger strands are broken and it was just down to one. We looked at our options, and let the line fairly loose and tied a fender on to the end. Currently the anchor rode is looped around a cleat on deck, and we are waiting on help to go get it. I have a back ache and our dinghy weighs too much to go out in this kind of weather. We are going to be paying a local for some help.

So, the local guy came out with 4 people in a Panga, the guy driving spoke English, once they understood what we were asking for they got the anchor up and then spliced the rope and gave it back. We were pretty happy overall.

There is no protection at all. The wind has a very long way to go over the sea which means a lot of FETCH resulting in significant waves for even a light breeze. We put out a stern anchor to hold us into the waves with the wind not quite lined up with the waves. Which helped some. We spent the day doing nothing else.

Facebook, phone calls, texts; internet stuff and not much else.

We spent the night motoring north. Watched the sun set, later the moon set, and finally the sunrise. One point of note, just shortly after we left Refugio, we heard Stray Cat on the VHF, we know that they are anchored in Puerto Peñasco, which was 95 miles to the north. We tried to talk to them, but could not quite connect.

By noon, we were anchored. With bow and stern anchors to deal with waves and wind. A rolls anchorage. The port captain, said anchor out for 14 days or go somewhere else.

We woke up about 7 am, got up and made coffee and slowly got moving. At 8 am we listened to the Net, hearing again about the 14 day quarantine outside Puerto Peñasco. We are so NOT looking forward to that. Then breakfast and devotions. Renee’ is going to some cooking today (things that can be heated up easily for bad weather), and I am doing a whole bunch of nothing. We will leave around 6 pm tonight for the 105 mile crossing. We are targeting arrival at around noon tomorrow.

We spent the day doing almost nothing. Trying to nap, and then after lunch going for a short swim. Then showers. As I said a quiet day. I have plotted the course to Puerto Peñasco, pretty difficult, course is 000 (due north) for 104 miles. At 6 knots, that is right at 18 hours.

We woke up about normal 6 am or so, and we were underway by 7:30. We had breakfast and devotions underway.  Later we listened to a sermon. There was virtually no wind until about noon or so, at which point I put up the sails and turned off the motor. Renee’ ran three loads of laundry and hung them up to dry. We also ran the water maker all day, keeping up with the washer and ending with about 90%, as we neared the last turn to go in to the Puerto. We plan to finish laundry and run the water maker to top off the tank on the way north to Puerto Peñasco tomorrow.

We arrived at about 3 or 4 (depending on what clock you look at, we still have not decided what time zone we are going by. We are the only boat here, and we anchored in the middle cove of this bay, in about 35 feet of water. Once everything was taken care of we went for a swim, visibility here is poor, only a couple of feet. We found quite a bit of sea weed wrapped around the prop. This was the tough stringy kind, not the big leafy kind.  We got if off the prop and checked the rest of the bottom of the boat. The zinc look pretty good. But there is still quite a bit of marine growth, which will get washed off when we get hauled out.

We checked our email, and the weather and we are planning on leaving tomorrow about 6 pm or midnight. It is about 105 miles from here to Puerto Peñasco, which means about 18 hours at 6 knots. So, if we leave at midnight we should get there at 6 pm, if we leave at 6 pm, we should get there at noon. Downsides to leaving at 6 pm is that there is not supposed to be any moon light tonight, moon set tonight is at 11:22 pm, and it is only a tiny crescent. The moonrise tomorrow is at 9:51 am. Which means we have only starlight and our boat lights to see what we are doing. Not optimal, but we also have radar, and once out of this port, there are no rocks between here and Puerto Peñasco.
